The Government Bill Ett modernt public service nara publiken - villkor 2020-2025 (A modern public service close to the public - conditions 2020-2025), Govt. Bill 2018/19:1367 introduced a number of initiatives to tackle the new media situation. Among other things, local journalism is being strengthened in areas with poor media coverage, while an online mandate is being assigned that involves the core activities of public service being expanded to also include on-demand streaming services on the internet and not just terrestrial radio and television. The range of new programmes in the national minority languages Finnish, Yiddish, Meankieli, Romany Chib and Sami will expand during the licence period. This also applies to sign language.
These efforts will strengthen the media area in the change that, among other things, digitalisation means for the media field.
