De même que Métropolis de Fritz Lang témoigne des qualités artistiques du cinéma muet allemand, The Story of the Kelly Gang marque à la fois la naissance de l’industrie cinématographique australienne et la formation de l’identité australienne. De façon plus significative encore, ce film marque l’apparition du format « long métrage ».

Réalisé par Charles Tait en 1906, The Story of the Kelly Gang serait le premier long métrage de fiction produit dans le monde.

Au milieu des années 1940, on pensait que The Story of the Kelly Gang avait fatalement disparu comme tant d’autres films produits sur des pellicules de nitrate. Mais à partir des années 1970 la National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA, Service national des archives cinématographiques et sonores) a rassemblé des fragments du film miraculeusement retrouvés et des documents de présentation du film (l’affiche et la brochure publicitaire originelles) pour produire une reconstitution unique en son genre qui comprend presque 17 minutes du film, restaurées au moyen de la technologie numérique, sur les 60 minutes de la production originelle. Depuis la première proposition d’inscription, soumise par la NFSA en 2006, la découverte de nouvelles séquences du film à la British National Film and Television Archive (Archives nationales du film et de la télévision du Royaume-Uni) nous a permis d’ajouter une scène complète à cette reconstitution.
