Muzium Negara, National Museum of Malaysia

The National Museum, a striking building characteristic of traditional Malay architecture stands proud in the heart of Kuala Lumpur as a repository for the country’s rich historical heritage. After its recent upgrade in 2008, the Museum has become a more interesting and interactive venue for visitors, taking them on an exploration of Malaysia’s history beginning from the prehistory period to Malaysia today.

Erected on the site of the Selangor Museum, which was destroyed during the Second World War in March 1945, the idea for its construction was triggered in 1957 after the country’s Independence and it was officially announced in 1959. Inspired by the background of national identity, its architectural design was endorsed by the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, enabling it to become a reality in 1961.

Standing proud, it was then officially opened by Malaysia’s Third Yang di-Pertuan Agong on August 1963, six years after the country’s independence.
